It’s March 8th – International Women’s Day – the perfect day to reflect upon the amazing women in our lives. As a woman studying physics, I spent the majority of my day in physics classes and programming. I’m incredibly grateful to live in an era where I can do these activities without fear of judgement or discrimination – all thanks to brilliant female scientists such as Ada Lovelace, Marie Curie, and Lise Meitner, as well as tireless work by feminist activists.
I’m inspired by many women in my life. From lecturers brimming with enthusiasm for their subject, to my mum with impressive strength and resilience, as well as peers that seem to have mastered balancing studies, life and hobbies. I currently study in a (still) male-dominated field, and the majority of my course mates are men. The women I have met are brilliant and it can sometimes feel like we have our own little community, encouraging and looking out for each other (‘you go girl’).
There’s still a long way to go. I hope that ten or twenty years from now, a woman in my position will no longer feel the field is male-dominated. I pledge to do all I can to make that happen.
